Music of the Christmas Season

There are many beautiful Christmas songs, whether of sacred or secular genre. During this season I hope to add music to this post once a week. These are a few of my favorites, and I hope you will enjoy these selections.
Please let me know what your favorite songs are.

December first

Sung by Johnny Mathis appearing on the Tonight Show December 1974.
Written in 1944 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells.
Originally subtitled Merry Christmas To You.

The Christmas Song

(Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

1

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

2

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

3

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
Merry Christmas to you.

Unlike me, some of you have your houses decorated for Christmas, the presents are wrapped and under the tree, and the others are in the mail. I hope to catch up soon as I enjoy this wonderful time of the year. Our celebrations are to reflect our joy of the birth of Jesus, our saviour, and the presents we share are a reminder of the most perfect gift that God gave to each of us.

The spirit of Christmas should always be with us, but the Christmas season now begins.

  2. I haven't decorated at all yet. Lily is coming Saturday afternoon to decorate. I am not really into the season yet, but Mom loved Christmas and I think the best way to honor her is to make sure I celebrate Jesus' birthday. he should not be shortchanged because I am sad right now. I am not putting a star or an angel on the top of my tree because one of my friend's isn't because her mom is the angel looking down and I thought that was so beautiful so i am not either. Mom is the angel at the top of my tree this year and every year from now on. I miss her so much at times.

Thank you for all your support and kind words on my blog. They are so appreciated. It is friends like you who are pulling me through this time, that and God, because without him, where would we be?

    Thanks again.

  5. I also like that song very much. My favorite song is Meke Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sister. When I was about eight years old my Uncle Babe taught my brothers and me to hula . He was in the Navy during World War ll
and in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. After the war he lived with my grandparents and he was great fun . At Christmas time we would
always hula around the Christmas tree to that song . I always smile when I hear it.

  6. Oh, I love it that two comments mentioned the old Bing Crosby Christmas songs! When I was a little girl, that was THE ONLY Christmas album we owned and I memorized every song. I still have the old, breakable 33-1/3 LP, plus a newer vinyl 33-1/3 LP, and now the CD! Christmas isn't Christmas without Bing!

  7. Wishing you a very blessed holiday season ! While we do celebrate Jesus every day it's good to have a special celebration too.
Two of my favorite songs are Adeste Fidelis... O Come all Ye Faithful, and Joy to the World. For secular songs, Pretty Paper, sung by Roy Orbison (written by Willie Nelson) and Blue Christmas sung by Elvis.

  9. Oh lovely songs! "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" - definitely a favourite of mine. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. I'm trying to go easy on gifts, so that my young son doesn't think its all about receiving presents. Have a lovely weekend. ;)

  15. Would Wham's Last Christmas be lowering the tone? Yes, I was afraid so. The Frames, then, with Two Little Boys had Two Little Toys. What a lovely series of yours; looking forward to more.
